The Romans created a defensive line from Scotch Corner to Carlisle mainly on what is now the route of the A66 road. The line was dotted with signal stations and forts. Unfortunately most of the remains are now just bumps in a field or buried. However much detail and history has been revealed by aerial imaging and archaeological digs, such as the A66 digs currently taking place.
